FITCHBURG — Wakefield High girls’ track members Quin Wilcox and Ella Ferrell recently competed in the MIAA Meet of Champions held over multiple days from Thursday to Sunday at Fitchburg State.

Wilcox shattered her own school record by 3 seconds in the 800 meters on Thursday. The sophomore was the 20th seed entering the race and ended up 8th overall to make the podium in a new school record time of 2:14.48. With that time, Wilcox qualified for New Balance Nationals in Philadelphia from June 19-22.

“She ran a very gritty, smart race,” said head coach Karen Barrett. “I am so happy for her. She works so hard, and definitely does not know how good she really is. Being humble and hard working with a great attitude is a recipe for an awesome running career.”

Ferrell competed in the 2 mile at the Meet of Champions on Thursday. The freshman ran well in the 90 degree heat. She previously qualified for Nationals with an 11:23 at the state meet.

“She ran a great race today and I am looking forward to seeing her compete for the next three years,” said Barrett.

Wilcox finished up her terrific season on Sunday with a personal best 5:02.53 in the mile, placing 10th overall. That time is within one second of the mile school record.

Wilcox and Ferrell represented the Warriors well at the Meet of Champions and will now get ready for Nationals.

“Both girls have tremendous work ethics and great attitudes,” said Barrett. “I’m so proud of the way they both competed this season.”
