WAKEFIELD — The Middlesex League’s volleyball coaches recently met to vote on All-Stars for the 2021 season. Wakefield seniors Amanda Nett and Maddy Seabury, both captains, earned All-Star awards.
Seabury controlled the middle of the court with 147 kills, 45 service aces and 43 blocks.
“Maddy was such a strong leader on the court from the first moment I met her last season,” said head coach Kayla Wyland. “Not only did she show this by modeling it on the court, but she also modeled this with her dedication to the program, team and herself. When she was on the court, there was a calming, confident feel that made all of the players around her better. She is a motivator, hard worker and an all around incredible athlete. Her strength as an attacker, passer and server led us to where we were this season.”
Nett, the libero who led Wakefield’s back line, had 297 digs and 48 service aces.
“Amanda was relentless in her job to defend the court,” said Wyland. “She is the epitome of ‘team over me’ and our program’s philosophy, ‘All out, All game, All season.’ Amanda was and will always be prepared, consistent and ready to achieve her goals. She sacrifices herself for the team and was a huge reason for our success this year as a physical player as well as a leader on the court.”
The Warriors finished the regular season at 12-7 overall and 9-7 in league play, 3rd in the Freedom Division. Melrose was first with a 15-1 league record. Wakefield beat 2nd place Burlington (11-5) for the first time in program history. The Warriors won both matches.
Building off that momentum, Wakefield made the state tournament for the first time and won their first tourney matchup with a 3-1 road victory over No. 13 Milford. The No. 20 Warriors fell to No. 4 Billerica in the Round of 16 to finish with an overall record of 13-8.
“We will miss them so much next year,” said Wyland of Nett and Seabury. “They have both left us and future volleyball players with an example of what it takes to be a high level player in our league and in the state.”
