WAKEFIELD — The WMHS baseball team celebrated their 2019 season at the annual banquet recently.

The Warriors had plenty to celebrate this year.

Wakefield won the Freedom Division outright with a regular season record of 12-8. They then set their sights on breaking a 16-year-old record.

The program hadn’t won a tournament game since 2003. Head coach Kevin Canty’s Warriors shattered that curse with a 13-5 outburst against Greater Lawrence at Walsh Field, then went on to beat No. 1 seed Whittier Tech 2-1 in the quarterfinals. Their run ended in the semifinals against Middlesex foe Woburn.

At the banquet, the Warriors presented awards, honored the All-Stars and announced the captains for next season.

The 2019 Middlesex League All-Star reps from Wakefield were senior captains Erich Hickey, Tommy Mottl and Gabe Sanders, as well as sophomores Chris Alden and Danny Hurley.

Individual awards for the varsity team went to Sanders (MVP), Hickey (Coaches Award), Alden (Pitcher of the Year), Anthony DeVito (Unsung Hero) and Zach Kent (Newcomer of the Year).

Liam Stromski was named MVP of the JV team while Evan Simoneau was MVP of the freshman team.

The annual winner of the Geoffrey Walter Award was Tommy Mottl. The award, which was created by Geoffrey’s friend and current assistant coach Tom Leahy (WHS ‘08), is presented each year to the player who best exemplifies Geoffrey’s qualities of heart and leadership, as well as talent on the field. The baseball program continues to donate every year to Geoffrey’s fund at The Scholarship Foundation of Wakefield.

The captains for next season were announced as upcoming seniors Chris Coombs, Anthony DeVito and Scott Elwell will lead the team in 2020.
