Boston sports fan, enjoyed the beach and collecting coins

WAKEFIELD — William J. Petersen, Jr., of Wakefield, died on July 30 at the age of 67 surrounded by his family. He was born in Woburn on January 6, 1958 and was raised in Woburn, Nashua and Wilmington where he graduated from high school.

Bill was a huge Boston sports fan, but he particularly loved the Boston Bruins and the sport of hockey. He also enjoyed trips to the beach, collecting coins, and playing golf. Bill was most passionate about his family; he loved his family dearly and cherished every moment with his children and grandchildren. After his family, his second love was his Chevy Silverado, he’d spend hours washing it and meticulously caring for it.

Bill was the beloved husband of Renee (Francis) Petersen of Wakefield. Devoted son of Janice (Ryder) Corby of Wilmington and her late husband Robert. Loving father of William Petersen and his wife Kelly of Tewksbury; Samantha Cordis and her husband Steven of Bella Vista, AR; and Nicholas Petersen of Wakefield. Proud Grampy of Claire, Cameron and Amelia. Caring brother of Steven Corby and his wife Patricia of Wilmington and the late Christopher Corby. Cherished uncle of Richie, Ryan, Madison, Katherine and Jennifer; and many other family members and friends who will carry his memory in their hearts.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 5 from 9 to 10:15 a.m. at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose. Immediately following the visitation, a funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. at the Lazarus Center for Healing Shrine, formerly St. Florence Church, 47 Butler Ave., Wakefield. Interment to follow the mass at Forest Glade Cemetery, Wakefield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill’s name to the American Cancer Society,  P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741.
